The Bespoke Tubular sash, scarf, stole, and shawl.
100% silk or wool
Beautiful accessories handcrafted in Scotland from 3.3oz/yd² 100% pure mulberry spun silk or 100% wool.
Each bespoke creative piece ensures meticulous craftsmanship that honours traditional artisanal techniques at the heart of Askival of Strathearn and The College of Master Kilt Tailors.
Created using the traditional tartan 2 x 2 twill weave which drapes beautifully, is strong, does not wrinkle easily, and recovers well. It is light and comfortable, warm in winter and cool in the summer.
There are 2 layers of cloth (tubular) so no frayed sides or visible machine stitching.
The purled silk tasselled, and 5 knotted lattice fringing are hand frayed, taking care not to catch the warp threads and then are traditionally knotted with patience and diligence, paying due attention to the pattern, tension, and uniformity of the knotting. Because the technique is labour intensive requiring patience and skill, this traditional fringing is not commonly available. The time to fray, knot and finish ranges from 12 to 24 hours depending on width of fringing.
So often today, silk accessories are made from single layers of silk dupion or wool with just an inch of fray for the fringing.
At present the silk is available in the following tartans:
- Edinburgh
- Perthshire
- Muted Strathearn
- Murray of Atholl “Modern”

The Timeless Allure of Tartan Silk
Askival Tartan Silk symbolizes a beautiful connection between the cultural heritage of Scotland and China, showcasing the enduring legacy and craftsmanship that transcends borders.
The Tartan’s history is rich and varied and is primarily associated with wool fibres.
This silk version employs the 2 x 2 twill weave, identical to that used in traditional wool tartan. The twill weave enhances the exquisite imagery of the tartan pattern and creates a smooth, warm/cool, and soft-textured fabric, celebrated for its superior draping qualities compared to plain weave fabrics.
Like wool, silk is one of the oldest fibres utilized in textiles, and its unique properties lead to the creation of fabrics that are not only beautiful and fine with a beautiful lustre but also remarkably durable. The very term “silk” has become synonymous with excellence in quality.
Other remarkable properties of silk:
- Hypoallergenic: Silk is naturally hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
- Breathability. Silk allows air to circulate, making it breathable and comfortable to wear in different temperatures.
- Thermal regulation. Silk can help regulate body temperature, keeping you cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather.
