Storing Your Kilt

The kilt is best hanging using a good strong special kilt hanger which clips the kilt below the waistband.

A new lease of life

The kilt is best hanging using a good strong special kilt hanger which clips the kilt below the waistband.

Hanging from loops does not support the shape or the waistband.

Lay the kilt down on a clean flat surface and fold the under apron over the pleated area. Fold in the edge with the strap. Fold the over apron over the under apron ensuring the waistband is at same level for the hanger to grip the three layers.

Cedar wood moth repellent rings are preferred to the camphor mothballs and are deemed effective.

Store in a sealed plastic garment bag with the cedar wood moth repellent rings to protect it from moths and dust and store hanging up freely.

A kilt roll is useful for transporting the kilt.

Moth damage prevention

48 hours in the freezer in its plastic bag will kill any eggs or larvae.  After you take it out, just rehang it.

A careful steam clean will also do the job.

Cleaning your kilt

Avoid chemical dry cleaning and learn to clean your kilt carefully and infrequently at home.

Askival of Strathearn offers a cleaning service. The kilt will be washed and the pleats realigned and secured ready for the complete kilt to be pressed and have a new lease of life. Any repairs required can be addressed as at the time.

Bring the kilt out to air prior to wearing to reduce the cedar smell if it is strong.
