 Kilt making is an Art

I try hard to find words to express what the kilt and kilt making does to the soul and our hearts. I know there are two situations when I am palpably at my happiest and that is when I am with my  children and my grandchildren, the other is when I am in the beautiful Oak Room  coaching individuals who are happily working away at their kilt, learning, creating and achieving.

I looked for inspiration to help me describe the art of kilt making and the experience. The following quotations, I thought were apt.

“When I say artist I mean the one who is building things … some with a brush – some with a shovel – some choose a pen.” ~Jackson Pollock ~  in kilt making we choose a needle to build the kilt.

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” ~Vincent Van Gogh ~ Kilt making is where out of 8 to 11 meters of tartan, through a series of small processes, we produce the kilt.

The experience is emotional, healing and good for the soul – to me, the following describes it well:

“Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul — and you answer.” ~Terri Guillemets

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”. ~Thomas Merton
